There are two groups of inhibitors.
1) Urease Inhibitors which block the activity of the enzyme urease. Urease is found in soil and along with water hydolyze urea into ammonium, which volatilizes out of soil into the atmosphere.
2) Nitrification Inhibitors, which reduce the population of particular soil bacteria that convert ammonium to undesirable nitrites and nitrates.
